What AI Overviews are, how Google chooses its sources and the tactics that get your brand cited: authority, structured content, entities and digital PR.
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that sit above the blue links and cite the pages they draw from. To be cited you need three things working together: recognised authority on the topic, content shaped so a machine can lift a clean answer, and a strong entity footprint that tells Google who you are. Digital PR builds the authority, structured content earns the citation, and measurement is by share of AI voice rather than rank alone.
An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary that Google places at the top of a results page for many queries. Rather than sending the searcher straight to ten links, Google synthesises an answer from several sources and cites the pages it used. Those citations sit in the most valuable space on the page, above everything else.
This changes the goal. The old target was rank one. The new target is being one of the handful of sources Google trusts enough to quote. A page can rank well and still be absent from the Overview, and a page can be cited in the Overview while sitting lower in the classic links. Winning here means becoming a source, so the work is about credibility and clarity as much as keywords.
Google is not picking at random. It leans toward pages that are clearly relevant to the query, easy for a model to parse and published by an entity it already understands. Three signals do most of the lifting.
Illustrative. Share of citations across AI Overviews and AI engines.
Once you know the signals, the work becomes concrete. Four tactics move the needle, and they compound when run together.
Cover your category in depth rather than chasing single keywords. A cluster of pages that answer every real question a buyer asks tells Google you are the reference for that topic. Depth beats breadth, and consistency over time is what turns a site into a source.
Write the answer first, then the detail. Lead sections with a direct response, use clear question-shaped headings, keep passages self-contained and add schema markup so machines read the page the way you intend. An Overview can only quote what it can cleanly lift.
Make your brand unambiguous to Google. Consistent naming, a strong knowledge presence, structured data and links to the topics you own all help it file you as a known entity in your category. Entities are how the model decides you belong in the answer.
Authority is granted by others, so it has to be earned off your own site. Digital PR that places your brand and data in credible publications builds the third-party signals Google reads as trust. This is where our paid and search work and PR meet, because the same credibility that wins Overviews also feeds the AI ad surfaces.
Rank tracking alone will mislead you, because the answer now sits above the links. Measure the things that reflect the new surface: how often your brand is cited across AI Overviews and other AI engines, your share of AI voice against named competitors, and the referral traffic and assisted conversions that follow a citation. Track these month on month and you can see the authority compounding, the way the chart above shows.
